Chapter Eleven

Lyndy’s teeth chattered despite the layers of blankets wrapped around her coat and shoulders. Misplaced, or leftover, adrenaline thrummed in her system as the EMT added two stitches to the cut on her forehead. She hadn’t blacked out, thankfully. Hadn’t gotten a concussion, but the pain had been excruciating as she’d hit the rough and unforgiving brick with a hellacious whack. Her vision had blurred, maybe from the impact, maybe from the tears, and she’d collapsed in silence as the pain stole her breath. But Cade had been there to pick her up.

Now her throbbing head was only one of her many parts wishing for aspirin, ice and a bed. Her neck and shoulders were whiplashed. Her back was achy and sore. Her hands and knees were scraped and bleeding, though at least the wounds had been cleaned and treated by a paramedic with an angel’s soft touch.

Cade paced several feet away, clearly livid and fresh out of patience. He barked at local law enforcement officers, federal agents and a growing number of bystanders who he thought should’ve done more to catch Lyndy’s attacker before he’d disappeared. Apparently, the back door of one building in the alley made an excellent escape hatch, and the attacker had fled after nearly knocking a woman’s head off. He was long gone by the time police arrived. Cade had been forced to choose between chasing the bad guy and caring for Lyndy. He’d chosen her, and her heart had cracked irreparably open for him. A pain she would surely deal with later.

Despite Cade’s frustration that citizens hadn’t given chase for him, many had rushed to help provide triage and countless others had called 911 when they’d heard Lyndy scream. According to her angelic EMT, the lines had been jammed with reports of Lyndy’s abduction. Thanks to local media coverage following Carmen’s attack, everyone was on the alert for the Kentucky Tom Cat Killer, so they were quick to call but slow to act. Perfectly understandable to Lyndy, who wasn’t convinced she’d have tried to take on a potential serial killer if the tides had been turned. Cade was, clearly, less forgiving.

She homed in on the local news crew that had set up just outside the perimeter established by the police. The crew had nearly beaten officers to the scene, and she couldn’t help wondering if they knew more than she did at this point about what had happened.

“The Tom Cat Killer has escalated,” the reporter in a navy suit and festive tie explained to the camera. “He’s got one local woman on his mind, and he’s desperate to have her. Proof? He struck again today, right here in this familiar downtown alley, an offshoot of Main Street, amidst a brood of holiday shoppers. But the people of our community responded with a resounding no!” He paused for dramatic effect, and Lyndy felt another welling of tears. She loved and appreciated Piedmont’s sense of community in a crisis, but she hated being a victim.
